Japanese hot-stamping foil manufacturer Washin Chemical Industry has acquired UK-based Foilco, a supplier of foils for luxury packaging, labels and graphic arts. The acquisition gives Foilco access to Washin's manufacturing capabilities and extensive product portfolio, while providing Washin with an established international sales and distribution platform.
Washin dates back to 1924 and began as a specialised formulator and supplier of high-grade wood paints and architectural coatings. Over a century, the company transformed from a domestic Japanese paint supplier into an international chemical manufacturer specialising in precision surface coatings, functional films, and hot stamping foils.
Foilco is a family-run company founded in 1987 by David Hornby and is located in the North West of England, between Greater Manchester and Warrington. Foilco executives, brothers Matt and Paul Hornby, first came across Washin representatives in 2025 and were impressed by the company's technical knowledge, its aspirations for growth and its recognition of Foilco's achievements.

Through this acquisition, Foilco gains access to Washin's portfolio of more than 3,000 colours and over 300 grade formulations. Matt Hornby called the range an 'incredible resource', especially when it comes to creating bespoke colours and technically advanced grades.
Foilco also offers innovative products such as Moonrock, a celestial foil pattern which is designed to give the impression of depth on a flat surface. This product has been developed using technology taken from hologram manufacturing and produces the effect of movement and three-dimensionality without the need for varying light, different viewing angles or embossing. The technology provides designers with a unique method of achieving surface effects in printing and packaging.
For Foilco, becoming part of a larger manufacturing group gives it greater stability and helps to strengthen its position with major brands. Washin also receives from Foilco an established international sales, distribution and marketing network to aid its global expansion.
The Executive Officer of Washin, Shin Nakamichi, stated: ‘the merger combines Foilco's international experience with Washin's ability in manufacturing; it is a perfect combination’.
