Will Every 3D Image Always Be Called a Hologram?

A topic that continuously grates on some within the holography community is the corruption of the term ‘hologram’ to apply to any display or image that heightens the sense of solidity or depth. For that group of holographers, there is some guidance and perhaps reassurance from a new research paper from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, China.

New Technique Reveals How Butterfly Wings Grow into Natural Diffraction Gratings

Iridescence and holography are two techniques used in security printing to display colour shifting phenomena that depend on the angle of viewing or illumination of a surface. Colour shifting phenomena also occur naturally in nature, such as the iridescent shimmer of a butterfly’s wings due to the precise structure and arrangement of the microscopic scales on its wings.

Holograms: Eye-Catching, Distinctive and Secure

At the latest count a third of all banknotes contain a diffractive feature, in the form of a patch, stripe or thread, 327 to be precise. According to Frank van der Horst of the DNB in his presentation at last month's Holography Conference, the feature is the second best in public recognition terms after watermarks – which makes one wonder why the other two thirds of banknotes don’t use one!
